“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. In contrast, the Romans have remained steadfast in their faith (v. 21), which justifies their inclusion. However, Paul warns that the Romans can also be cut off if they do not persevere in their faith and kindness (v. 22-23). This indicates that those who are justified before God can fall away from their faith and lose their salvation, being “cut off.” Paul also mentions that those who are cut off can be grafted back in if they do not continue in their unbelief, because God has the power to graft them back in (v. 23). These verses significantly challenge the belief in “once saved, always saved.”
